The New Year is here and I’m kicking off 2017 with Robot Edu. I remember when I was my son’s age thirty years ago. Being a fan of movies like Star Wars, Star Trek, Tron, Short Circuit and more. I wanted to have robots in my school and at home, but back in the 80s and early 90s. Robots were not very cheap not to mention, you could get a few months out of them and they didn’t last long. Now, robots and coding are very common in the classroom. In fact, outside of 3D printing, robots in the classroom are a growing educational learning in schools. Today, I’m going to talk about how to create a Breakout Edu with Ozobots, Dash and Dot, Sphero and the coding App, Tickle.

This past week, I was wrapping up my next to last ELA class I need for my new state license and one of the activities we went over was how you hide a penny in the classroom and you have to design a map to find it. The next step is the student creates their own map and hides the penny and leaves it so another student kind find it based on the map they create. Since everyone is a different type of learner, everyone’s map will look different and will be done in a different way to find the missing penny. I of course thought up of a few ways you could do this in your classroom.

The other day I said I was going to start remodeling my office to be more inviting to students and staff alike. While I planned on doing this slowly over the next few weeks. As they say, time waits for no man and I ended up getting an earlier start due to an accident occurring during some regular checks, such as my entire shelf collapsing (don’t worry, I’m OK). So, after a few hours of moving, cataloging, archiving and a few other things here is the start to my remodel.

Many following me on my social networks know that I use Perler Beaads a lot from the classroom to personal use. Something that is very popular with Perler Beads is Super Mario Brothers power up Mushrooms. There have been so many interpretations of the power up. These have ranged from designing them around pop culture to iconic characters. The last couple of weeks that I have been introducing Breakout Edu to my teachers and students. I have looked for aways to put a new spin on the game and differentiate the activity. I was on my Perler Bead Facebook group and one person had created an amazing camo mushroom and x-ray version and then my son was talking about Cookie Monster.

In this Periscope Edu video, I demonstrate how to use the Locks app by Breakout Edu on IOS. I used my new tripod to set up the recording so I could have more interaction with the audience and used my Apple TV to mirror my iPad. The last few days, I have been setting up Breakout Edu sessions for my teachers. I’ve been scanning Varage Sale, Amazon and local garage sales to get locks and pieces on a budget. Being a 2-1 school of both iPads and Chromebooks, I have been integrating and looking for ways to utilize technology for our new Breakout Edu sessions. Just the other day, I discovered the awesome Locks by Breakout Edu IOS App. It is awesome, you can set up all the various types of locks and store them in a digital library right on your IOS device. All you need is to set up a free User Account. In fact, you can set up a classroom account and program in the various puzzles for each lock and then set up them up around your room or school with ease. This past Saturday, I attended Edcamp DuPage at Wheaton North High School. The Edcamp was a bit different than I have experienced before. While starting at the usual 8 AM kick off time. It only went to about 12:30 due to other events at the school and then finished with a wonderful lunch at the Arrowhead Golf Club. What was different was due to the condensed time of the Edcamp, sessions were proposed earlier and then we voted on them. While several sessions that were proposed did not occur due to the time, I did finally attend my second Breakout Edu. I loved the Breakout Edu session, Breakout Edu if you haven’t heard are games that teach critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving, and can be used in all content areas. Usually, it focuses around a locked box, this can be when of the Breakout Edu’s boxes or a toolbox that is locked and you have to figure out clues to unlock the box in a set time frame. Ours was 50 minutes and we finished with 37 minutes left on the clock.
During the session we learned to use our various digital tools, learned about Morris Code and relay on each other’s specialities to unlock the four padlocks that were keeping the box locked. As I said, this was my second one, the first was a simple 30 minute one I attended at a workshop at my local collage that was solved by scanning various QR Codes and figuring out the clues. This one was more in-depth and played at history. It was such a great time, I’m already putting together a kit for my teachers before the school year is over and I will be sharing ways to do basic to advance Breakout Edus this month.
